Pineoblastoma – Rare & Aggressive Brain Cancer
What is Pineoblastoma? – Pineoblastoma is a type of cancerous tumor {malignant} that arise in the area of the pineal gland. It is rare, aggressive, and fast growing! The exact diagnosis is critical for choosing the correct therapy. Pineal tumors typically present with hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid pressure within the brain.
Who is affected by pineoblastoma? – Pineoblastoma mainly affects children but can also occur in adults.
What are the treatment options for pineoblastoma? – Treatment of Pineoblastoma includes surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Is there a cure for pineoblastoma? – Each diagnosis is unique, making it difficult to determine the chance of curing pineoblastoma. Individuals with Pineoblastoma live an average of 20 months after their diagnosis, and 10% of affected individuals are alive 5 years after their diagnosis.
Survival is better when individuals are older than age 3 when diagnosed, when treatment includes complete removal of the tumor during surgery, and when cancer cells have not spread to other parts of the body {metastasized}.
